Brooweena A Top Place To Visit

Add Brooweena township to your must see places in the Fraser Coast Region. It is a taste of outback, with the luxury of being just 80 minutes from the beaches at Hervey Bay. Whether you have a spare day or even half a day, take the scenic drive west of Maryborough. You will discover a township rich with history & beauty.
I was lucky to have a chat with a few lively & lovely local ladies today, Tina, Sharah & Alice. All passionate about their community & very knowledgeable about the history & future of Brooweena.
What struck me about Brooweena was how welcoming the people are. The welcome mat is rolled out for visitors & they genuinely appreciate the time you take to visit their town. It is hard to go undetected in the town, with one way in & out, the historical museum, markets & school dominate the centre of the residential area. You only have to venture a few hundred metres out of the town centre & you are amongst rolling hills, cattle grazing & magnificent established trees. While the region is in a state of drought, & Brooweena is no different, there is still a beauty in the region worth visiting. The hills, distant peaks of Mt Walsh & scattering of dams makes your drive relaxing & scenic.
The Brooweena State School is the last standing school in the district, currently employing a Principal Teacher & 2 teacher aides, is also run with the support of volunteers. Not surprising to learn that the school is an integral part of bringing the community together & learning how district schools were funded partly by locals, with government support, you get a deeper understanding of how education in small communities is highly valued.
Brooweena is making its mark also on the Military Trail, and this year hosted its first ANZAC Day March.
The sawmill opened in Brooweena in 1925, and had a solid 80 years providing off-season casual employment for local farmers. The sawmill closed 3 years ago & the community can feel the flow on effects through their younger generations. Families were reliant on the off-season income from the sawmill, with that gone it is another factor forcing families off the land.
I must admit the original Woocoo Shire Council Chambers was my favourite historic building. It is a tiny 3m x 4m building, where meetings were held. It is worthy of a photo.
